Coal bed methane (CBM), also known as coal seam gas (CSG), is a type of natural gas that is extracted from coal beds or coal seams. It is formed during the geological process of coalification, where organic material in coal beds undergoes biogenic and thermogenic processes, leading to the generation of methane.
Coal bed methane is primarily used as a source of natural gas for heating, electricity generation, and industrial processes. It can also be used as a feedstock for the production of hydrogen or other chemicals.
Significant CBM reserves are found worldwide, including in the United States, Australia, China, and Canada.
